The adventure started in February 2018 when two architects bought a marine survival lifeboat and after a year left on four-month voyage to the Arctic. The lifeboat was originally built in 1997 with the intention to carry 100 people in a survival situation. Their redesign included two forward cabins, a kitchen and dining area, a bathroom, bunk beds, and a stern cockpit. The name Stødig is a Norweigian term meaning sound and steadfast and demonstrating the lifeboat's reliable and functional design. The converted boat became a robust, unsinkable, and spacious expedition vessel. The aim of the voyage is to explore the Arctic with its wild and isolated landscapes, to showcase the ability of design innovation to facilitate self-sufficiency in such extreme environments, to document and share the challenging adventure through photography and film.
