The Deep Sea Special was a very unusual lifestyle watch, but it was a crucial development for Rolex since it aided in the creation of the Submariner and Sea-Dweller lines. Its origins can be traced back to the early 1950s, when Rolex chose to build tool watches for diving and other water sports rather than just waterproof watches. It enlisted Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard to help test numerous prototypes as part of this push. During testing in the Marina Trench, the watch was able to reach a depth of 35,789 feet. That watch, like with the majority of others, is housed in science, technology, and watch museums, making this commemorative watch the sixth of its kind to become publicly available. Phillips will auction it during its Geneva Watch Auction: XIV in November, and it was made in 1965 and had a serial number of 35.
