PORT DE LA SELVA HOUSE

Port de la Selva is a seaside town in northern Spain that is known for its volcanic-rock shorelines and ocean location. Maria Castello Arquitectura created a home that blends in with its surroundings. The house is made up of two concrete volumes set into the hillside. The two square structures extend over the ground below, extending toward the sea. To better blend the construction with the natural topography, both apartments are capped with gravel from the excavation process, while bedrock contours form outdoor patios. Internally, a minimalist look of Port de la Selva is achieved with a palette of concrete and oak, and large walls of glazing frame panoramic vistas of the coastal scenery. Concrete is the primary material both outside and within. Similarly, its resistance to bad weather makes it one of the most enduring alternatives, requiring minimum maintenance and thus being more sustainable.
