As traffic jams become a new norm in many cities and the volume of traffic only increases, future mobility is one of the pertinent questions. This why a German initiative called CAPTN (Clean Autonomous Public Transport Network) has designed an autonomous electric ferry concept called Vaiaro. The goal was to create urban mobility that avoids the car and helps to achieve ambitious climate change goals.

The Captn Vaiaro is the future concept of the ferry traffic on the Kiel fiord envisioned to transport passengers from the west and east side with an electric propulsion system, resulting in quiet journeys with zero emission. The project was designed as cooperation between Partners from Kiel University and from the University of Applied Sciences. The two different designs of the VAIARO project are quite striking. One is a glass-enclosed rectangular vessel, with a dorsal fin that cuts right through the middle. The other looks like a ferry terminal, with latticework covering, that detaches from the dock and travels across the bay to the next landing area. Both vessels will create a ferry experience as a must ride for residents and visitors.
